Manufacturing Press Installation & Relocation

Scope of Work:

PSC executed a complex, multi-phase press installation project involving international shipments, super loads, precision rigging, and structural modifications within the customer’s facility.

Project Phases:

Phase 1:

Unloaded and staged components from 15 ocean containers.

Phase 2:

Received and staged (2) press frame halves and (1) hydraulic cylinder from (3) super load deliveries using a J&R Lift-N-Lock gantry crane and a 6-line Goldhofer SPMT. Components were squatted into position using the SPMT hydraulic system.

Phase 3:

Transported the hydraulic cylinder to the gantry crane and positioned it behind the press pit.

Phase 4:

Installed press frame halves:

  • Moved each frame half with the Goldhofer SPMT to the hydraulic gantry.
  • Rigged, up right, and staged the first frame half onto temporary steel disbursement blocks.
  • Installed steel tube turnbuckles to stabilize the frame.
  • Temporarily removed a section of the overhead crane truss due to height restrictions.
  •  Set second frame half in final position; reinstalled the crane truss section.
  • Lifted and joined the first frame half with the second to form a single press frame assembly.
  • Used (6) J&R Lift-N-Lock gantry housing and a custom-engineered shoring column to support the gantry track over the pit.

Key Challenges & Solutions:

  • Tight Delivery Schedule: Ocean containers required real-time handling with limited notice.
  • Transport Complexity: Deliveries transited the Port of New Orleans and traveled inland via barge and dual-lane transporter, facing weather and river constraints.
  • Limited Overhead Clearance: Required temporary truss removal and re-installation.
  • Structural Support Needs: Designed and built a custom shoring column to reinforce gantry support across the pit.

Equipment Utilized:

  • J&R Lift-N-Lock Gantry System (6 housings)
  •  6-Line Goldhofer SPMT
  • Custom Shoring Column

Component Specs:

  •  Press Frame Halves: 340,000 lbs. each, 14’-8” W x 3’-7” T x 30’-1” H (uprighted)
  •  Hydraulic Cylinder: 220,000 lbs., 12’-6” L x 10’-5” W x 6’-8” H
