Tunnel Boring Machine Lift

Project Overview:

The scope of this project involved the supply and execution of a specialized lift system to handle and lower a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with an estimated weight of 766 metric tons into a starter shaft approximately 185 feet deep. The project encompassed full-service delivery, including engineering design, project management, site supervision, and skilled labor (operators and riggers) for the assembly, operation, and disassembly of the lifting system.

Scope of Work:

Lowering a 766-metric-ton TBM into a 185-ft starter shaft using strand jacks and hydraulic gantries.

Key Challenges & Solutions:

  • Tight Site: Just-in-time logistics and offsite loading.
  • Ground Pressure: Collaborative load planning with general contractor.

Equipment Utilized:

  • 900-ton Strand Jacks
  • Hydraulic Gantry Systems (700/900 ton)
  • Load-spreading plates
