Project Overview:
PSC Crane & Rigging was tasked with the complete hoisting and rigging of a 112,000-pound chiller into its final position within a facility. The project began with the mobilization of a crane and skilled rigging crew to lift and place the chiller onto the receiving platform. From there, the team executed a precise transfer operation—moving the chiller through the building opening and navigating it into position using a combination of jack-and-slide and gantry systems. This complex operation required careful coordination, specialized equipment, and expert execution to ensure safe and accurate placement of the heavy unit.
Key Challenges & Solutions:
Challenge 1: Basement Ground Bearing Pressure (GBP) Constraints
Limited ground bearing capacity in the basement restricted the ability to support heavy equipment and loads during chiller placement. Solution: PSC implemented basement shoring to reinforce the structure and safely accommodate the weight of the chiller and rigging equipment.
Challenge 2: Temporary Platform for Chiller Staging
A temporary platform was required to stage the 112,000 lb. chiller, demanding precise alignment and structural stability. Solution: PSC assisted in the final floor layout and alignment of the platform to ensure it met both operational and safety requirements for staging.
Challenge 3: Platform Load Capacity
The temporary platform needed to support a substantial load without compromising safety or structural integrity. Solution: PSC worked directly with plant and contractor engineering teams, supplying detailed load data to verify the platform’s capacity and ensure compliance with engineering standards.
Equipment Utilized:
- 550 Ton AT Crane
- 500 Ton Gantry
- 500 Ton Jack and Slide
