IPU Case Equipment Install

Project Overview:

PSC was selected to execute the turn-key installation of IPU Case Machining and Friction Stir Welding equipment manufacturer’s program. The project encompassed three production lines—Pre-Zone, Mainline, and Assembly—and included machining centers, overhead robot rails, elevated conveyors, welding cells, and process cells.

Scope of Work:

Turnkey installation of machining and welding lines including logistics, alignment, and power connections.

Challenges:

The large size of the customers workpiece required the use of the largest machining centers available from the equipment supplier—the first of their kind installed in the U.S. Due to their massive dimensions, each machine had to be disassembled into front and rear sections for shipping, then precisely reassembled on-site.

Solutions:

The front section of each machining center measured over 13 feet wide and weighed more than 70,000 pounds. Due to tight aisle clearances, the machines were initially transported from the unloading area using powered machine skates. Upon reaching the high bay, a tandem lift was executed using a 75-ton Mobi-Lift and a 60/80 Versa-Lift to safely remove each unit from its pallet base. The machines were then transferred onto specialized rollers and precisely jacked down into position over the pre-drilled anchor locations,
ensuring accurate alignment and stability.

Equipment Utilized:

  • Versa-Lifts
  • Mobi-Lift
  • Traksporter
  • Skates
